Applied Sciences and Technology Laboratories (ASAT LABS) was founded in 2017 by three young people from Northern Uganda as an indigenous organization.
After they saw the suffering that children and young people faced in the communities, lacking access to basic education which denied them a chance to grow up and thrive in society.
In Northern Uganda, unfortunately, due to the lack of funding for schools, poverty and marginalization brought about by the over 20 years of Civil war that left many children orphaned, families destroyed, infrastructure such as school buildings, and equipment destroyed, there has been a reduction on the hands-on elements of STEM subjects, limited access to STEM opportunities, low level of classroom achievement in science subjects leaving students without the fun side of them. Further children did not have access to equitable and quality STEM education.
ASAT LABS, supplements what they are learning in school with an innovative project-based curriculum designed to capture their interest and show them the various career options available in STEM.
We implement our programmes in schools, community centres and libraries across Northern Uganda using mostly volunteers from local universities for both in school and out of school children. Our ultimate goal is to empower children and young people to leave up to their full potential through STEM education and create a highly skilled, socially conscious STEM workforce here in Uganda to drive local innovation and development.
